Why football's data problem isn't the data

Football clubs have never had access to more data than they do today. Sprint distances, load metrics, tactical breakdowns the numbers pour in daily. A number on its own tells you nothing

Take a simple example: a player's sprint distance has dropped over the last six weeks.

At face value, that figure is worthless. A drop could mean a dozen different things, and without knowing which, you can't act on it responsibly. Is the player carrying a fitness issue? Has the coach made a tactical change that shifts their role? Has the performance team deliberately managed their load?

Only when you layer that context on top of the number does the situation come into focus. Only then can a decision maker know whether this is something to manage, something to watch, or nothing at all.

The data is the easy part. The understanding around it is what actually drives good decisions.

The context is being lost every single day

So the obvious fix is to pull all of it together the data, the context, the human knowledge into one full picture that decision-makers can rely on.

Here's the catch: in most clubs, that picture can't be assembled, because most of the understanding was never recorded in the first place.

Football clubs don't do their work in software. The conversations, the judgement calls, the reasoning behind a load-management decision it lives in people's heads, in side conversations, in messages that scatter and disappear. The understanding that should fuel tomorrow's decisions is built up and lost on a daily basis.

Why a dashboard won't fix it

This is where it becomes clear that a better-looking dashboard won't solve the problem. A dashboard only displays what you've already got, and what clubs have got is fragmented, undocumented, and disappearing.
